The ark is coming home. First Samuel tells how the Philistines send it back on a cart drawn by two cows. The people of Beth-shemesh are harvesting when they see it arrive, and they rejoice. Doré sets that meeting in an open landscape, with the cart and welcoming figures gathered below a broad sky. The horizontal format gives the journey room to unfold. Look closely at the people approaching: the return becomes a shared moment.
