Daniel stands quietly among the lions. The danger is all around him, yet Doré gives the figure a remarkable stillness. Daniel 6 tells how his continued prayer leads to punishment in the den. By morning, he is alive; he tells the king that God sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths. The light above, the dark rock and the animals gathered below give this familiar story a strong visual presence.
