The pillars are beginning to give way. In Judges, the imprisoned Samson is brought into a crowded Philistine temple. He asks God for strength once more, takes hold of the supporting pillars and brings the building down, dying with those inside. This is a tragic ending to a troubled life. Doré fills the scene with broken stone and falling figures, while the great columns make the scale of the collapse unmistakable.
