People gather on a hillside to listen to Jesus. In Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount begins with the Beatitudes and moves into teaching about prayer, mercy, forgiveness and everyday conduct. Doré gives the listeners room in the scene. Some sit close to Jesus; others stand farther back beneath the trees. The faces and gestures make this feel like a gathering of individuals, each hearing the words from a different place.
