The story behind the image

In the Book of Judith, a besieged community is delivered through Judith’s dangerous entry into the enemy commander’s camp. The account describes her killing Holofernes and carrying away his head. Doré places the figure inside the tent, where drapery and shadows heighten the drama. This is a difficult subject from a book included in Catholic and Orthodox biblical traditions and in some editions of the Apocrypha.

Two details to notice

  • The tent’s heavy curtains divide light from darkness.
  • Judith’s raised arm gives the interior scene a strong vertical line.
