The story behind the image

Delilah presses Samson to reveal the source of his strength. Once his uncut hair is removed, the account describes his capture by the Philistines. This illustration concentrates on the closeness of the two figures before that violent outcome. The richly patterned setting and precise textures draw the viewer in, while the story gives the intimacy a troubled meaning.

Two details to notice

  • The two central figures fill the foreground with opposing expressions.
  • Patterns in the furnishing and robe reveal the engraver’s fine control.
