The story behind the image

Before Solomon’s Temple can take shape, timber must be cut and carried from Lebanon. The biblical account describes an agreement with Hiram of Tyre and the large workforce behind the construction. Doré makes that labor visible in a steep landscape filled with figures and enormous trees. It offers an unusual view of a familiar sacred building: the work and materials that came before it.

Two details to notice

  • Large tree trunks dwarf the workers around them.
  • Diagonals through the steep terrain give the composition its momentum.
