Lot’s family flees the destruction of Sodom after being warned to leave and not look back. The account describes Lot’s wife looking behind her and becoming a pillar of salt. Doré sets moving figures against a troubled, burning sky, holding escape and loss within the same image. Its force comes from the direction of the bodies and the immense atmosphere above them.
