The story behind the image

Hagar leaves Abraham’s household with her son and provisions for the journey. The biblical account describes a painful family separation that leads into the wilderness story. In the illustration, the water vessel, the child and Abraham’s extended arm make the departure concrete. The old paper and precise folds in the garments give this quiet scene a lasting physical presence.

Two details to notice

  • The water vessel identifies a practical necessity for the journey.
  • Abraham’s extended arm contrasts with Hagar’s lowered gaze.
