The defeat at Mount Gilboa ends Saul’s reign and the lives of his sons. Wounded and facing capture, Saul takes his own life in the biblical account. Doré’s composition places the fallen king within the movement of battle, where horses, soldiers and weapons crowd the landscape. Its subject is tragic; the detailed linework makes the disorder and cost of defeat visible.
