Music and violence meet in a royal chamber. David plays before Saul, whose jealousy and anger turn into an attempt on the younger man’s life. The poised spear and David’s defensive movement give the scene its immediate tension. Behind that sudden action is the larger story of a troubled king and the future ruler growing beyond his control.

Two details to notice
- The long spear cuts a diagonal across the chamber.
- David’s instrument contrasts with the weapon aimed toward him.
