David has an opportunity to kill the king who is pursuing him, but chooses restraint. After leaving the cave, he shows Saul a piece cut from the king’s robe as evidence that he could have taken his life. The illustration sets the encounter within a wide, rocky landscape. Distance becomes part of its meaning: David appeals to Saul from beyond the reach of the gathered soldiers.

Two details to notice
- The rocky descent separates David from the larger armed group.
- Small figures and distant ridges create a strong sense of scale.
