The story behind the image

The returning son is met by welcome before he can complete his explanation. Jesus’ parable follows a young man who wastes his inheritance and comes home expecting to ask for a servant’s place. His father restores him to the family. This image catches the emotional reunion in expressive hands and faces, with the wider household gathering around them. It is a story of mercy with room for the older brother’s harder questions.

Two details to notice

  • The kneeling son brings the reunion close to the foreground.
  • Raised hands and gathered onlookers give the homecoming its movement.
