The story behind the image

Two women claim the same living child. Solomon’s startling command to divide the baby reveals the mother who would rather surrender her claim than see the child harmed. The illustration turns a royal chamber into a moment of suspended action. The king’s gesture, the figures at his feet and the surrounding witnesses lead the eye through a story about judgment, compassion and the difference between possession and care.

Take a closer look

Two details to notice

  • Solomon’s raised arm directs attention across the crowded chamber.
  • Patterned walls and folds in the robes reward a close look.
