The story behind the image

An intimate family scene carries a complicated story. With Rebekah’s help, Jacob approaches his aging father Isaac disguised as his brother Esau and receives the blessing intended for the older son. The illustration brings the encounter into a shadowed interior, where touch and proximity matter more than spectacle. Its calm surface sits against the deception, rivalry and consequences described in Genesis.

Two details to notice

  • Isaac reaches toward the standing figure from his bed.
  • Draped fabric and the open doorway create layers of light and shadow.
