The story behind the image

A crowned king sits beside scrolls, surrounded by the quiet weight of royal authority. Solomon is remembered for asking for an understanding heart rather than wealth or a long life. This portrait gives that reputation a reflective form: the still figure, long beard and unfurled writing invite a slower look. The fine parallel lines in the robe show how much expression an engraved illustration can hold.

Two details to notice

  • The crown and open scroll connect kingship with learning.
  • Closely worked shadows give depth to the beard and patterned robe.
