A Biblical Figure

A closer look at the scene

A robed figure stands on broad steps with hands raised together near the head. Around this figure, people stand, kneel or bend at different levels. Tall columns and patterned walls give the gathering a formal architectural setting. Look at how closely spaced printed lines build shadow in the robes and distinguish the lighter central area from the surrounding scene. The composition guides attention through posture, height and contrast: the raised hands draw the eye upward, while the bowed figures bring it back to the steps. Geometric decoration gives the architecture a rhythm of its own.

Two details to notice

• The central figure raises joined hands above the head while standing on the steps.
• Kneeling and standing figures surround the central figure beneath columns and geometric wall patterns.
