Amos speaks from outside the centers of royal and religious power. His biblical book describes him as a herdsman and a worker with sycamore fruit, called to challenge Israel’s conduct. He condemns worship that is separated from justice and concern for others. The illustration presents a solitary figure with a staff above distant buildings, giving that public message a quiet, reflective setting. It is a portrait of the prophet rather than proof of one particular episode. The contrast between a lone figure and a settlement below invites thought about the courage of speaking against a community’s comfortable habits.

Two details to notice
- The solitary figure leans on a staff above buildings drawn in the distance.
- Prickly plants and heavier foreground lines contrast with the lightly worked sky.
