The story behind the image

The dancing figures capture a welcome home with a tragic story behind it. Before battle, Jephthah promises a burnt offering of whatever comes out of his house to greet his victorious return. His only child, an unnamed daughter, comes out celebrating with music and dance. He grieves; she asks for two months with her companions. The text says he fulfills his vow and records annual lament for her. Interpretations of her ultimate fate differ, but the narrative’s grief is unmistakable. This artistic scene invites reflection on rash promises and the human cost of victory.

Two details to notice

  • The central dancer raises both arms as the welcoming group approaches.
  • A round tambourine and patterned garments give the celebration rhythm and texture.
