The story behind the image

The period caption uses ‘dumb’ to mean unable to speak. Matthew’s account describes a man brought to Jesus and portrays his restored speech as deliverance from a devil. The crowd responds with amazement, while the Pharisees challenge Jesus’ authority. That contrast gives this small scene a wider meaning: the same event prompts wonder in some observers and opposition in others. Here, the kneeling figure and Jesus’ steady presence bring the encounter close to the viewer. The historic wording belongs to the religious account and should be understood in its original context.

Two details to notice

  • The kneeling figure reaches toward Jesus while the surrounding onlookers watch.
  • Closely spaced lines give weight to the robes and depth to the distant trees.
